Soapstone Counters

More Kitchens

Soapstone has been used throughout Europe and the Americas for  centuries.  In colonial and present day New England, soapstone has always
been a favored product for use in traditional sinks, kitchen countertops, fireplaces, and wood stoves. Soapstone’s low porosity, exceptional resistance to heat, and its inertness to etching and damaging chemicals make it ideal for kitchen countertop use.

Soapstone fits extremely well with a traditional rustic look, but it also compliments modern contemporary design.  It’s soft color, smooth texture, and usability; make soapstone a truly unique and versatile material.

In its natural state, soapstone’s quiet gray color and spotting texture resembles granite, while occasional white or green veining takes on the effect of marble.  A liberal application of mineral oil will deepen the color, creating a rich, dark traditional look.  Without oil the light gray color will darken over time, especially in areas exposed to food and skin oils.

The durable composition of soapstone makes it less brittle, ideal for kitchen countertops, sinks, and fireplaces.  It is inert to acids and alkalis and has been used extensively in acid sensitive environments, including kitchen countertops and sinks, for centuries.

Because of the unique make-up of soapstone, your countertops and sinks wear evenly.  Scratches are easily blended in with the surrounding areas and maintenance consists of another liberal application of mineral oil to the entire surface.
